Throughout Spanish I, our class built language skills through storytelling. We created class stories, we read stories, we retold stories, and we practiced writing our own stories. This final project is a culmination of all that language learning.
ReflectionLast year I didn't take Spanish 1 as a Freshman because I didn't think I was ready to learn a new language during COVID and online school. When starting off this year it was tough to start learning Spanish but I got through it. On the left you can see a graph of my free writes. Free writes are a 10 minute session we have to write any story and as you can see in September I only wrote 20 words. That is still impressive for learning a language for only a month. As time went on my free writes got more details and had a higher word count. We had 2 weeks to write a story in Spanish and the minimum word count we had to have was double of our free writes. I wrote a total of 320 words in my story which I am even impressed by. I am really glad how my story and illustrations came out. When starting the story I was nervous and didn't think I could do it. I made up thoughts as I went and had Jenny to guide me. I wouldn't change anything about how this story turned out and I'm super proud of it. Next year I hope to keep an open mind about learning Spanish more and using what I know. I am super excited to work with Jessica Mccallum and see what she has to offer for next years projects. Spanish 1 has been a completely different experience than I thought and has been quite enjoyable. The biggest thing I learned is to have an open mind about Spanish and anything can be learned if you work hard.

About Alan Gene NibbelinEste es mi abuelo Alan Gene Nibbelin.
The Reason I Chose This PersonThe person I honored was Alan Gene Nibbelin he was my grandfather. I chose him because I didn't have anyone to pick. The only people that have died in my family are my grandmother and grandfather and I only met them once when I was very young. It's my mom's dad and mom and she has talked about them a lot in my life so I thought it would be interesting to learn more about them like what they were like and character traits. I honored Alan by setting up pictures of him with the Dia De Los Muertos colors and also bringing in one of the things he liked to eat, muffins! This experience has been really fun to see all the people other people in my class have honored. Making the offering was really fun and I had a great time learning about Alan and a bit about my families past. If I was to do this project differently I would make my offering a bit nicer, the boarder does seem a bit rushed and messy. I would also fill in the empty space with either more skulls and marigolds to represent Dia De Los Muertos a bit more. The main takeaway I would have to this project is how it has opened another world up to honoring the dead in my eyes. It opens another culture to more people and maybe honoring the dead like Dia De Los Muertos maybe will become a normal thing for everyone.

Dia De Los MuertosThis project is about Dia De Los Muertos which translates to Day of The Dead. It is a celebration that happens every year around the 1st and 2nd of November mostly in Mexico. Our task for this project was to make an offering to a person we have lost in our life. These offerings would be put on one big altar with everyone else projects to honor these people. When we started learning about day of the dead in class all I knew was it was about honoring dead people and had no idea how much there is to it. In my family we don't celebrate death at all, when someone dies we grief and move on because it's in the past. In this project I have learned so much about Dia De Los Muertos and want to share it. In Dia De Los Muertos people setup altars with certain elements around them. To start off there are marigold flowers & candles around the altar to guide the dead back home to visit their family. The next thing that is usually on the altar is food, specifically the favorite food of the person you are honoring. Moving away from the altars there are loved ones either grieving about the person that they loved or happy that they are able to honor them. People visit tombstones to also honor them to visit the them. The last thing is people are usually hanging out as a family or dancing and having a big celebration!
