What is this project? In this project we learned about poetry and in the end made our own poem. We looked at poems with strong meanings, confusing meanings, and analyzed these poems and looked at poetic devices in these poems. Then we had assignments to make short poems to give us inspiration for our final poems. For the final project we had a few options, we could make a video that goes with the theme of our poem, spoken word, or an art piece to show at the final exhibition.
Artist StatementWe had an assignment at the beginning of this unit to make a “Raised By” poem. Raised by poems talk about how we were raised or whom we were raised by. I built my poem off of that assignment. When making it, I wanted people to feel like they grew up with me. I have never thought about how I grew up until we started this poetry unit. I have always had free range of what I was able to do when growing up and wanted to show my experience and the important things to me from when I was growing up. I focused on the younger years of my life, around 4 to 8 years old. This is because I feel like that's when I did the most in my life with traveling, being with my siblings, being around their friends, and being that kid that always tagged along with what they were doing.
I started by adding imagery to my poem because I wanted to make the person feel connected to the poem and maybe even relate to it while reading. When growing up kids think of everything being magical and real. I thought that when I was younger, in my poem I said, “Stuffed animals calling our names when we walked past them.” I wanted to have a way to show my imagination and even connect with other people. In the fifth stanza, I showed imagery by saying, “Walking into a candy store/Seeing a million colors like a rainbow/The reflection of candy in our eyes.” This line I think is super strong because it describes how kids see candy stores. It puts you in a setting as a kid where you can imagine the candy and colors popping at you while walking into a candy store. Imagery is a big part of my poem and I think it really can make the reader feel like they were with me as I grew up. When making this poem I already had a base to start with because of the assignment we did earlier. I took advantage of this and added important details about my life, along with big details about how I grew up. At first, my poem was very bland and didn’t have that many details, which I didn’t like. After being critiqued, I added lots of details to the poem and made my stanzas longer to include all of the details. This added character to my poem and made it more flavorful. I chose to talk about being a kid rather than a teenager because when you are a kid, there are a lot more ideas and imagination with stuffed animals, action figures, and anything you could think of coming to life. I think there is more spark, and I can come up with a lot more ideas and memories when thinking about being a kid back when life wasn’t as stressful. |

This project our class learned about what adolescence is. We studied for weeks about relationships in adolescence, developmental theories, brain development in adolescence, and moral development. Our goal with this project was to learn about adolescence and then make an essay and mask to go along with it. This project was super interesting because students can relate to it and dig deeper into their own lives.
