For my 3 week internship I was at Tech-Nichol Device Repair, a local store in Durango with Nash, Willow, Sadie. I worked on consoles, computers, phones, and was shown micro soldering for repairing motherboards. It was a great experience to see what the industry was like and if I wanted to use my interest as a career.
My Project
Once I walked into Nash's shop I was brainstorming ideas for my project. Nash showed 2 big boxes of old phones, it could have been 200 phones total. A few years ago, I saw these art pieces of iPhones taken apart and put into a frame to display all the insides with everything labeled. Seeing all the phones Nash had I knew thats what I wanted to make. I could learn all the components of an iPhone and what each piece does while having something to hang up in my room later.
My Reflection
Before LINK, I had already developed the skill of being independent and problem-solving without asking a bunch of questions. While on my internship my mentor Nash would give me a device and would tell me to take it apart or fix it. I would look up on my phone how to take apart that device instead of asking him step-by-step how to do it. While at LINK, the main skill I learned was to take everything slow if I was doing it for the first time. There was a moment when I didn’t keep screws organized on a device so when I was putting it back together, I didn’t know where to put them. I tried my best to solve the issue myself and luckily another technician was able to help me. During my time at Tech-Nichol Device Repair, I had a lot of fun and learned quite a bit about the industry. I’m glad Nash was able to take me in for a few weeks and give me this opportunity. My internship was the first experience I had with my interests in the real world. It was a great way to see if computer hardware was something I really liked or if it was the hands-on I liked a lot. I would love to see other careers that are very hands-on to get an idea of other opportunities.
